It is understandable that so many people think learning local history is more important. This is mainly because it facilitates youngsters to shape a strong sense of national identity. Such is human nature that people tend to gravitate to novelty, so it is a commonplace that individuals, especially youngsters, are more likely to be attracted by exotic cultures instead of domestic ones that are often regarded as clichéd. Naturally, the influences of their own cultures will be undermined. To avoid local cultures from withering away, history about their motherland ought to be emphasised on school syllabuses, as history is closely bound up with the cultural legacies which allow students to build cultural confidence of their own nation.
